These include installations for power generation, power distribution, lighting, security, communications, plumbing, waste treatment, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning. The firm also provides facilities management and maintenance support. It serves commercial, industrial and institutional clients such as Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) and Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB). Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) is a major competitor.

The Street was surprised last week, when EMCOR guided FY08 EPS from $2.08-$2.28 to $2.22-$2.42 and FY08 revenues from $6.3-$6.5 billion to $6.8-$7.0 billion. Analysts had been looking for $2.31 and $6.76 billion. The CEO cited "solid order activity" and a "strong contract backlog" for the favorable view.

The news kept EME shares cycling through a positive four-month trading channel. The price is currently consolidating at the base of that channel, suggesting the potential for a rise back toward the top. Correspondence of the stock's 50-day moving average to the base of the channel backs the rebound notion.

Brokers recommend the issue with three "strong buys", one "buy" and three "holds". Analysts expect a 15% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The EME P/E ratio (13.12), PEG ratio (0.87), Price to Sales ratio (0.30), Price to Book ratio (1.99), Price to Cash Flow ratio (10.22), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (7.50), Sales Growth rate (29.16%), EPS Growth rate (144.44%) and Return on Investment (12.58%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 600 SmallCap Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $18.25 and $38.69. A stop-loss of $24.75 looks good here. Note that the firm is next expected to release quarterly results in late July.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says recent downgrades are killing whole industries, and they're coming at a terrible time.

You can't lose autos and aerospace. Yet that's what's happening. The devastating aerospace downgrade by Goldman yesterday had pin action galore, wrecking everything from United Tech (NYSE: UTX) (Cramer's Take) and Parker-Hannifin (NYSE: PH) (Cramer's Take) to BE Aerospace (NASDAQ: BEAV) (Cramer's Take). It took the whole frame down with it and made everything toxic. And it happens at a terrible time. It isn't like Honeywell (NYSE: HON) (Cramer's Take), which with a few days left in the quarter can come out defending itself. Goldman rolled a perfect strike.

And now the bowlers are back for more with an equally devastating "sell everything" call based on GM (NYSE: GM) (Cramer's Take). Once again it is seamless: Lear (NYSE: LEA) (Cramer's Take) and Tenneco (NYSE: TEN) (Cramer's Take) get jettisoned too, but you know that Visteon (NYSE: VC) (Cramer's Take) and American Axle (NYSE: AXL) (Cramer's Take) and Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) (Cramer's Take) and BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA) (Cramer's Take) -- the good ones! -- go down with the car.

Mind you, I am not even counting the Citigroup (NYSE: C) (Cramer's Take) conviction sell, something about which I have had conviction for ages, ever since it became clear that the board was letting Chuck Prince destroy the franchise.

In each of these big group downgrades, there were analysts holding on to one or two in the group or actually believing that things will be fine -- a la the Fed. But we know otherwise.

I always thought this market would have a bias down if it lost banking, homebuilding, autos and retail. But if aerospace breaks down again and the brokers actually react to this downgrade -- there are only a couple of buys left on the Street -- then we will drop that next 5% that I was looking for sooner rather than later.

Jim Cramer is a director and co-founder of TheStreet.com.
The fund has some pretty high ideals according to its Web site: "We focus on the economic, environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that can materially affect a company's ability to sustain profitability and deliver returns. Our research plays an important role in forming our views on the quality of the business, the quality of management, and valuation."

So how does that translate in the real world? Al Gore isn't providing performance details, according to the Bloomberg story. It's kind of weird for Gore to be so mum considering that its biggest holding Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) is up more than 60% over the past year in U.S. trading.

Other big holdings aren't doing nearly as well. Nestle SA (VX: NESN) is up 4% and Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI) has only jumped a little more than 2%.

The Bloomberg story quotes the Nobel Laureate as saying, "More money is allocated by markets around the world in one hour than by all the governments on the planet in a full year." How true.

But the inconvenient truth for many of Gore's admirers is he's doing really well by not being in politics, making it unlikely that he will ever run for elected office again.

They have proven without a shadow of a doubt that this is not their strong suit. The proposed economic stimulus package has bi-partisan support and calls for an estimated $156 billion of tax rebates ranging from $500 to $1,000 (+ $300 for each child) that might show up in May.

If we are going to add on to our already humungous joke of national debt, than I want to invest this capital in something that will bring a higher return on invested capital (ROIC) than the paltry one time mad money. That expenditure should be for national infrastructure projects like roadways, bridges, tunnels, and waterways.

We have all heard about the poor condition of our national infrastructure and the hundreds of billions of dollars of repair work and replacement that is desperately needed.

This alternative would bring visible results that every single person in the country would benefit from and improved linkages always stimulate economic growth. Road improvements even reduce fuel consumption by shortening routes and reducing friction both strategically and physically.

Furthermore, this form of stimulus goes directly to support middle and lower income workers, the ones hurt by the severe downturn in the construction industry. The government, like private enterprise, benefits when it can borrow cheaply and invest at higher returns. This has been historically true of infrastructure projects.

Giving people a one time hand out is like giving your kids some cash for the week end. They will enjoy it while it lasts and it won't last long. However, building something usable will have a benefit for several generations.

If you are interested in a few stocks that would benefit from this type of investment you might add the following to your watch list:

WaMu had been preparing Wall Street for the hit since December. Still, revenues fell 5% to $3.41 billion in the quarter, missing Wall Street's estimate of $3.51 billion. For 2007, WaMu posted a loss of $67 million, or 12 cents per share, on $11.11 billion in revenue, compared to a profit of $3.56 billion, or $3.64 per share, on $13.68 billion in revenue in 2006. CEO Kerry Killinger said in a conference call that 2008 won't be much better. However, by midday Friday shares were up more than 6%.

After opening at $34.35 on Friday, shares fell to near $30 in morning trading.

Several of the big banks are reporting soon, but among other companies reporting this week are Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) and Johnson Controls Inc. (NYSE: JCI). Here is a quick peek at these two companies.

Schlumberger hasn't missed quarterly earnings expectations since 2004. When it reported third-quarter results back in October, its $1.09 earnings per share beat the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial by two cents, as well as the actual 81 cents per share in the same period of 2006. For the current quarter, analysts expect earnings of $1.13 per share, or $4.20 for the full year, up from $3.04 in 2006.

Schlumberger's 56.9 percent earnings per share growth forecast for the next three to five years is better than the industry average and the S&P 500. The analysts' consensus recommendation has been to buy Schlumberger for at least six months. The share price rose to a 10-year high of $114.84 in October, but has traded mostly in the $90s since then.

For news that could influence the earnings results, check out BloggingStocks' Schlumberger coverage.

Johnson Controls has met or beat earnings expectations every quarter for the past four years. When it reported fourth-quarter 2007 results in October, its 78 cents earnings per share were in line with estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, and up from 62 cents in the same period of the previous year. For the full year, earnings were $2.10, up from $1.74 in 2006. For the first quarter of 2008, analysts expect 37 cents per share, compared to 28 cents actual in the same quarter last year.

Johnson's forecast earnings per share growth over the next year is 18.7 percent, better than the S&P 500, but much less than the auto parts industry average. Yet, the consensus recommendation from the analysts is to buy Johnson Controls, and has been for at least six months. The share price climbed from a 52-week low of $28.55 about a year ago to a 52-week high of $44.46 at the end of October, but has slipped back to the low $30s since then.

The Street was surprised last week, when EMCOR reported Q3 EPS of 55 cents and revenues of $1.5 billion. Analysts had been looking for 47 cents and $1.44 billion. Management also guided FY07 EPS to $1.75-$1.80 ($1.58 consensus) and FY07 revenues to $5.8 billion ($5.71 billion consensus). Morgan Joseph and Friedman Billings subsequently reiterated "buy" recommendations and boosted their price targets to the $44.00-$45.50 range. The share price popped on the earnings news and then moved into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern. Stocks frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with three "strong buys," two "buys" and two "holds." Analysts expect a 21% growth rate through the next year. The EME P/E ratio (20.08), PEG ratio (1.34), Price to Book ratio (2.71), Price to Cash Flow ratio (15.83), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (12.63), Sales Growth rate (21.09%) and EPS Growth rate (57.14%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 600 SmallCap Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $27.10 and $38.69.
The company pleased investors late last month, when it announced Q2 EPS of 22 cents and revenues of $319.7 million. Analysts had been looking for 19 cents and $313.2 million. Management also guided Q3 revenues to $320-329 million ($322.60M consensus).

The news kept ALTR shares cycling through a positive four month trading channel.

SPX Corp (NYSE: SPW), a North Carolina auto manufacturer that once earned 90% of its revenue from auto-related businesses, now earns less than 3% from auto-related businesses after multiple divestitures and acquisitions. SPX Corp is now an infrastructure-related products and service manufacturer for the global power market.

Pittsburgh-based glass and coatings manufacturer PPG Industries Inc (NYSE: PPG) has put its windshield business up for sale. The company instead will rely on its high-tech coatings business and optical & specialty material segments that offer long-term growth potential.

Eaton Corp (NYSE: ETN), of Cleveland, has been very successful in expanding into the aerospace business. To reduce its exposure to the auto-parts industry, the company recently sold its automotive mirror controls business for $111M to Englefield Capital LLD. Eaton also acquired a host of electrical businesses including Marina Power Lightening, Senyuan Int'l Holdings in China and selective assets of Catalytica Energy Systems.

Not all companies want out, though. Johnson Controls Inc (NYSE: JCI) reaffirmed its commitment to their automotive segment, despite the fact that it's other two business segments, building efficiency and power solutions, are more profitable. Johnson Control's automotive segment provides seating, instrument panel, overhead, floor console and doors systems for passenger cars and trucks, and accounted for 57% of the company's consolidated net sales last year.

In the long term who's right and who's wrong will be determined by the strength of the domestic automotive business. If the "Big Three" could somehow be resurrected from the dead, the auto-parts space could start to feel a pulse again. However, the likelihood of domestic autos returning to its former glory is quite slim, especially with their dwindling balance sheets and "big-car" mentality when the rest of the world is searching for small, economical designs.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Analyst downgrades 7-19-07: CAH, JCI, SUN, TSM and VLO

Filed under: Before the bell, Analyst reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Bad news, Valero Energy (VLO), Johnson Controls (JCI), Cardinal Health (CAH)
MOST NOTEWORTHY: Statoil (STO), BG Group (BRG), Repsol (REP), Flow International (FLOW) and the refining sector were today's more noteworthy downgrades:
One of them is headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Emcor Group (NYSE: EME) is a leader in mechanical and electrical construction, energy infrastructure, and facilities services. It installs, operates and maintains electrical, mechanical, lighting, air conditioning, heating, communications, plumbing, security and power generation systems for a diverse range of businesses and government entities. The firm employs some 27,000 skilled workers, operating locally from 140 locations worldwide. Clients include Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY), Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB) and the U.S. Senate. Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) is a major competitor.

The company pleased investors earlier in the week, when it boosted FY07 EPS guidance from $2.45-$2.80 to $2.75-$3.00 ($2.86 Street consensus) and raised FY07 revenue guidance from $5.3-$5.5 billion to $5.5-$5.7 billion ($5.6B consensus). Management said the improved figures reflected continuing indications of strong demand patterns within many of the firm's markets. Emcor also declared a 2-for-1 stock split, payable July 9th. Friedman Billings subsequently reiterated its "outperform" rating on the issue. The stock popped above 30-day/50-day moving average support into a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern on the news. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling when they entered them. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with two "strong buys" and three "holds." Analysts expect a 21% growth rate, through the next year. The EME Price to Sales ratio (0.43), Price to Book ratio (3.10), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (10.68), Sales Growth rate (14.51%), EPS Growth rate (50.00%) and Return on Investment (11.01%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages.

Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 600 Small Cap Index. Over the past fifty-two weeks, it has traded between $42.45 and $71.78. A stop-loss of $62.50 looks good here. Note that the firm is next expected to report quarterly results in late July.
